Getting Ready

The resources in this kit engage students in team projects in order to create digital stories about their local community. Students create a digital story, connect with their local community and with each other in their teams. In carrying out their projects, students will be enhancing their employability skills, including their technology skills, oral and written communication skills, their capacity to learn independently and manage their own time, as well as their ability to plan and organise.

Careful pre-planning and preparation will ensure the success of the projects. Download the documents below and save them to your computer. They will give you the information you need to get started:

  1. ICT List
You will need to install Photo Story 3 and Media Player 10.
Use the ICT list to check that you have everything in place or to find out how to get what you need.

  2. Program outline
The Program outline summarises the ten session plans in the kit. It shows how sessions are related and how skills are built up.

  3. Session Plans
You can download the session plans by clicking the Session Plans option on the menu

  4. Project ideas
You will need to make contact with community groups and individuals before you start so that you know who is willing to participate in the students’ projects. Project ideas will help you to think of possibilities and ways to contact people in the community.

  5. Mapping the sessions to the CGEA, CSWE 2 and CSWE 3.
The resources in this kit have been designed for students studying the Certificate in General Education for Adults (CGEA) and levels 2 and 3 of the Certificates in Spoken and Written English (CSWE). The mapping documents show how each of the 10 sessions relates to these curriculum documents.

  6. How to use Photo Story 3
Give yourself a refresher course in using Photo Story 3 before you start by following the document How to use Photo Story 3. This easy-to-read guide has been specially prepared for language and literacy students.
