Enisaís Story Ė Level 2

When my husband and I arrived in Australia from Albania a year ago, we went to live in Shepparton, a town in north-east Victoria. There is a large Albanian community there. Shepparton is the centre of a fruit growing area and there was work for us in the canning factory. Itís a very nice town, the people are friendly and I like living in the country. In Albania we lived in a small town. I donít like big cities.

Soon after I arrived in Shepparton, I was visited by the volunteer tutor from AMES who told me about some English courses that were available at Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE. But these courses didnít suit me because Iím working full-time at the canning factory. The other possibility for me, according to the volunteer tutor, was to enrol in Distance Learning. Distance Learning is for people who want to learn English, but canít attend classes.

I work at home with the Distance Learning books and cassettes. I practise my English but I also learn a lot about life in Australia. Every two weeks I send exercises back to my teacher to correct. I record the speaking exercises and send them back too. I practise conversation with my teacher on the telephone. My teacher also helped me to make contact with other Distance Learning students around Shepparton, and we sometimes meet and talk together.

With the Distance Learning course Iíve finished Certificate 2, and started Certificate 3. Next year I want to change to part-time work at the factory so that I can go to a Certificate 3 class at Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE.
